Cosmos-184 data are examined on the plasma concentration and convection rate at 630 km in the subauroral zone during quiet and magnetically disturbed times. The smooth pattern of the drift velocity during quiet times is indicative of a large-scale penetration of the magnetospheric electric field into the plasmasphere, denying, thus, the presence of an Alfven layer on the plasmapause. During disturbed times, the ionospheric plasma drift exhibits velocity discontinuities which may be associated with the formation of an Alfven layer.
