Several examples of convection electric fields observed with the European Incoherent Scatter facility in the F2 region of the auroral ionosphere between 61 and 72 deg invariant latitude are discussed in terms of global characteristics of the ionospheric drifts. The potential distributions inferred from the electric field observations are then examined in the light of some indices of magnetospheric activity. In particular, it is shown that the potential drop from dawn to dusk increases with the magnetospheric activity index Kp. A preliminary analysis of the shapes and positions of two convective cells is presented. The need for combining simultaneous multistation observations to obtain complete description of the potential distribution and its variations with universal time is emphasized.
