A mathematical analysis is conducted for the Hubble Space Telescope's secondary mirror control structure whose geometrical model permits calculation of all six actuator positions on the basis of the secondary mirror position, and vice versa. A series of model-validating tests has also been conducted in which mirror positions predicted by the model were compared with the actual positions measured by test instrumentation. These tests have conclusively demonstrated that the mirror can be adequately positioned within required tolerances in only a few iterations.
