Quasi-linear theory is used to investigate the dynamics of the ion-beam acoustic instability in the plasma sheet boundary layer of the earth's magnetotail. An expression for the spectral density of the energy of the electrostatic waves as a function of the wave vector has been derived. The energy contribution of the ion-beam acoustic instability is found to be significant in the high-frequency range of the spectrum of broadband electrostatic noise in the magnetotail.
