Contribution functions for emission and depression are considered, as are the so-called response functions. On the basis of the physical conditions in the solar atmosphere, an attempt is made to formulate the requirements imposed on the contribution functions used in calculating the mean optical depth of formation of Fraunhofer lines. By way of example, calculations are made of the mean optical depth of formation of various segments of Fe I and O I Fraunhofer lines.
