A quantum-nondemolition technique for measuring the position of a free mass is developed analytically. The contractive-state approach to avoiding the standard quantum limit (Yuen, 1983) is modified by applying the principles proposed by Lamb (1969), and the modified method is shown to maintain determinism. The applicability of the results to laser interferometric gravitational-wave detection is indicated.
