The only scalar-flat metrics with spherical symmetry are given by standard initial slices of the Schwarzschild family of spacetimes. Until recently it was open whether there were any nontrivial time-symmetric initial data on R3 for the vacuum Einstein equation which are identically Schwarzschild outside some compact set. We describe a technique which resolves this question in the affirmative, and we also mention joint work which extends these results to the non-time-symmetric case.
