Assuming that the heterogeneity within the outer core takes the form of a tangent cylinder, the normal-mode splitting data are inverted for constraints on perturbations in compressional wave speed and density. The trade-off between the mantle, outer core and the inner core is explored with various data subsets, model parametrizations, damping strengths and data correction. In addition, an estimate of uncertainty is obtained by the Monte Carlo simulations. The resulting values within the tangent cylinder are 0.06 +/- 0.12 per cent for compressional wave speed and -0.06 +/- 0.20 per cent for density, and they suggest that the tangent cylinder is seismically homogeneous with the rest of the outer core.
