The interpretation of magnetotelluric data from southwest Iceland provides three constraints on regional temperatures for the crust and upper mantle. First, it appears that temperature gradients from boreholes one or two kilometers deep (60-120°C/km) can be linearly extrapolated to the base of the crust. Second, the temperature at the crust-mantle interface (10-15 km) is in the range 1000 +/- 200°C. Third, the temperature gradient in the upper mantle (15-100 km) is remarkably small and must be close to 1°C/km. Although the absolute value of temperature is uncertain, a distinct difference emerges between the range of temperatures estimated from the magnetotelluric interpretation and the range of temperatures theoretically calculated from the conventional heat-flow equation. These differences, we feel, are a direct manifestation of the tectonic setting of Iceland.
