The amplitudes and periods of the PcP and PcS phases of two sets of seismic waves were used to derive limits for the mean values of the shear wave damping parameters Q-beta in the mantle, and on the density jump at the mantle-core boundary (MCB). The seismological data were obtained at two different stations during an earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. Amplitude ratios were derived, taking into account geometric spreading. Comparison with plausible earth models confirmed a density jump at the MCB of about 1.7. Average estimates of Q-beta under both continental and ocean regions were in the range 650 + or - 340, in agreement with previous results. The best fit to theoretical data occurred when Q-beta was assumed to increase with shear wave frequency. Correlations between observations and model values yielded compressional velocities of 0.4-1.0 feet/sec in oceanic regions, and 0.3-1.0 feet/sec in continental regions.
