We describe a program to reduce systematic uncertainties in cosmological measurements using type Ia supernovae (SNe) at z>1. By studying the progenitor environments for cluster-hosted SNe, we can decouple intrinsic color from dust and also establish progenitor age and metallicity as an indicator of population evolution. We present color-magnitude diagrams of 25 high redshift (0.91; SNe Ia hosted by galaxies on tightly dispersed red-sequences constraining the presence dust. We have spectroscopically confirmed over 160 cluster members using Keck, Subaru and VLT spectra. By classifying spectra on the presence or absence of emission lines we have identified cuts in morphology that enable us to select emission line free passively evolving galaxies in the ACS z_850 images. We place constraints on cluster ages and metallicities by comparing stacked spectra against stellar population synthesis models. We conclude that the hosts of the aforementioned SNe are spectroscopically, photometrically and morphologically consistent with passively evolving galaxies. This subsample of minimally extincted SNe Ia thus provides a well-characterized candle with which to test cosmological models.
