Studying moderate redshift LIRGs is crucial for understanding galaxy evolution because of the rapid evolution in galaxies between redshifts 0 to 1. Here we present the IR luminosity function (LF) derived from 70 micron imaging of the GOODS-North, which is the deepest to date. The 70 micron band picks out on average cooler, lower luminosity LIRGs than 24 micron samples, which are more affected by AGN contamination, and it is also unaffected by the mid-IR PAH and silicate features.
We determine monochromatic 60 micron and total infrared luminosities for the 154 sources with S70 > 2 mJy (SN > 3 sigma). The majority (70%) of the sources have spectroscopic redshifts, and accurate photometric redshifts are calculated for the remainder. We explore the evolution of IR sources betweeen 0 < z < 1 by comparing the LF at moderate redshift with the local LF. In common with previous work, we find there is a significant degeneracy between luminosity and density evolution. We confirm the strong luminosity evolution of LIRGs between 0 < z < 1.
