Though Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) have been a profitable route for exploring the nature of dark energy, concerns over potential evolution in their properties with redshift remain. We analyze the mean SN Ia rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectrum, a region where the effects of differing progenitor composition are predicted to be observed, using high signal-to-noise Keck spectroscopy for a sample of 36 events at z=0.5 discovered by the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). We develop a new method for removing host galaxy contamination in the spectra, exploiting the photometric coverage of the SNLS, providing the first quantitative view of UV spectral properties for a large sample of distant SNe Ia. By comparing with spectra of local SNe, we show the mean SN Ia spectrum has not evolved significantly over the past 5 Gyr of cosmic history. Within the high-redshift sample, we observe significant UV spectral variations, larger than predicted in recent models, which do not follow expected patterns. We also demonstrate systematic differences in SN Ia spectral features with light-curve width which could represent a statistical limitation in the future use of SNe Ia for precision cosmology.
