A comparison in the Italian area of IGRF with a normal field computed at 1979.0 for the same area using 112 repeat stations suggested the use of a particular polynomial approximation of IGRF for total intensity. This approximation keeps the IGRF spatial gradients without changing their time variation, while it correctly updates the absolute secular variation level using absolute values from the closest observatory. The mathematical procedure used can be extended to compute reference fields for any area that includes a geomagnetic observatory.
