A search for 94 HST U-Band detected objects in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) release 2 (GR2) of the Ultra Deep Field (UDF) revealed 28 detections in the far ultraviolet and 45 detections in the near ultraviolet. Comparisons between the GALEX detections (1.5 arcsec/pixel) and higher resolution GOODS ACS images (0.03 arcsec/pixel) indicated at least 20 cases of significant confusion. In one of the GALEX detections, there are three objects, a spheroidal, a tadpole, and a spiral galaxy, which are comparable in brightness and less than 5 arcseconds apart but resolvable in the ACS image. Confusion results in the three galaxies being detected as one object in the GALEX image. Also prevalent are instances in which a bright galaxy dominates the UV flux in an area containing a fainter galaxy causing confusion in the lower resolution image. An example is a faint spiral galaxy located near a much brighter spiral galaxy. GALEX only resolves one object. Of the 45 GALEX detected NUV sources, inspection in higher resolution show 20 with at least one other UV source within the GALEX beam. As a result, using GALEX for galaxy counts may underestimate the number of sources by a factor of 2-3.
