IN connexion with studies on the origin and evolution of life on Earth1, and its possible detection in space, we have developed a sensitive method for the analysis of protein amino-acids, which includes the simultaneous determination of their optical configuration2. The approach is based on the separation of enantiomeric N-trifluoroacetyl (N-TFA)-isopropyl esters by gas chromatography with an optically active stationary phase3. We wish to describe here the application of the method to meteorites and a Pre-Cambrian sediment.
