A solar spectrograph for the visual wavelength range 300 to 800 nanometer (nm) and planned as a post-focus instrument for the NASA Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) to be flown with Spacelab is presented. The use of space qualified components and the resulting concept changes; integration and adjustment of the optics; definition of tolerances for the installation of optical parts; methods of demonstrating the optical performance; and operation during space missions are discussed. The requirement of 0,1 arc sec spatial resolution is met and it is concluded that the spectrograph is adaptable for SOT.
