Polar measurements of the magnetospheric magnetic field have been obtained before and after the compression of the magnetosphere by increases in the solar wind dynamic pressure. These increases have been compared with the predictions of two models. The first is an analytic model of Tsyganenko [1989] that includes an ellipsoidal magnetopause but no tail or field-aligned currents. The second is an empirical model containing the magnetopause current, the ring current, field-aligned currents and tail currents [Tsyganenko, 1996]. Perhaps surprisingly the Polar data agree best with the simple analytical model.
