The complex signal associated with a plane polarized signal is defined, and decomposed into two elementary complex signals of opposite polarities. The formalism for monochromatic signals is extended to wide band nonstationary signals and applied to the analysis of ULF waves. The formalism is more suited to almost circularly polarized signals than to signals having a strong linear component.
