One of the extensions of the conventional principal component analysis is the complex principal component analysis (CPCA) which can be a useful method for identifying traveling waves in atmospheric data sets. The applicability of CPCA to satellite data in the middle atmosphere for planetary wave and tidal analyses is discussed. CPCA is applied to temperature data from the NCAR TIME-GCM and GSWM models that were sampled along the orbit track of the SABER instrument aboard the TIMED satellite. The model sampling provides temperatures that would be measured by SABER if TIMED flew through the model atmosphere. Comparing the CPCA results to the full model results provides estimates of CPCA's applicability for analyzing planetary waves and tides in observational data. Preliminary CPCA results of SABER temperatures will also be shown, if available.
