Simultaneous observations of oblique and vertical velocities using the Poker Flat MST Radar are analyzed to determine spectra of horizontal and vertical motions in the upper troposphere, lower stratosphere and mesopause region. These spectra are compared with predictions from an internal wave spectral model and significant discrepancies are found. These discrepancies raise important questions regarding the interpretation of the observed spectra solely in terms of internal waves.
