Saponification of recent sediment samples was the most efficient of several procedures tested for the extraction of fatty acids. Between 32 and 65 per cent of the fatty acids in the sediments analyzed could not be released by organic solvent extraction. This fraction was released by saponification and is thought to be bound fatty acid. The precision of the analysis is an improvement over those previously reported for concentrations of fatty acids in sediments. Relative and absolute abundances of fatty acids from sediments give valid criteria for comparison of depositional environments only when uniform sampling and extraction techniques are employed.
