Scientific paper

The current state of knowledge concerning the planet Mercury is examined, taking into account the results of three flights of Mariner 10 past the planet. Conductivity and thermal measurements indicate that Mercury is covered by a layer of fine pulverized material like that on the moon. The magnetic field around Mercury is almost certainly related to an active dynamo process in the planet's core. Attention is given to dynamic considerations and global shrinkage, aspects of crater evolution, crustal formation, and questions of crater preservation.
