Values of the density index D, which describes the semiannual variation
of the thermospheric density, are examined. Values from the CIRA 72 and
the CIRA 86 are compared with values derived from observations (Shehnal
et al., 1986). It is found that the times of the extremes shift towards
later dates with growing height.
