Upstream of earth's bow shock, large-amplitude, low-frequency magnetic field fluctuations associated with the appearance of high energetic ions represent an example of strong Alfvenic turbulence. Employing the data of the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft, general properties of magnetic field power spectra are deduced by inspection of 21 different diffuse ion events. In most cases, a well developed power law fall-off is observed. Many of the observed features are reflected by a recently presented strong Alfvenic turbulence model. The model predicts a broad spectral peak of the transverse wave power component, while the compressional component decays continuously and dominates the transverse one at low frequencies. For high frequencies, the model spectra show an exponential decay for both components. This discrepancy with the observations is explained by the appearance of the discrete wave packets, which are a common feature of diffuse ion events, but which are not covered by the model.
