Thousands of profiles of atmospheric electron density have been consistently acquired by both the radio occultation experiment on the Mars Global Surveyor orbiter (MGS, 1998-present) and by the GPS-based radio occultation experiment on the CHAMP Earth orbiter (CHAllenging Mini-satellite Payload, 2001-2005). We select an overlapping subset of data to compare how zonal wave structure at ionospheric altitudes evolves with changing season, insolation, and local time on both Earth and Mars. We use a data set from November 2002 through June 2003, which maps to northern summer (Ls = 90 - 200) of Mars Year 26, following the definition of Mars Year in Clancy, et al. (2000). To analyze ionospheric wave structure for both planets, we use basic zonal wave decomposition at fixed altitudes, in 2 km altitude increments, for a few days at a time through the duration of each data set. When performing the wave decomposition, we take into consideration the slowly drifting latitude and local time sampling of MGS, and the varying latitude and local time sampling of CHAMP. The analysis returns an amplitude and phase at each altitude, for each apparent zonal wave number. In this work, we consider zonal wave numbers 1--4. The amplitude and phase values vary with altitude, local time, and season/insolation for both planets. This work contributes to a detailed characterization of zonal wave structure at ionospheric altitudes on both Earth and Mars.
