All available exospheric temperatures derived from incoherent scatter radar measurements have been collected for the development of a model of the thermosphere in combination with satellite mass spectrometer measurements of N2 density. A detailed comparison of the results obtained by the two radars at midlatitude: St. Santin (44.6 degrees N) and Millstone Hill (42.6 degrees N) has been performed. Results of simultaneous observations reveal good agreement in general, and a high degree of correlation is found between these two sets of data. However, several discrepancies exist in the models developed earlier to represent the measurements. In particular a value for the amplitude of the annual variation of the mean exospheric temperature at Millstone has been reported (about plus or minus 11 per cent) that is twice that at St. Santin (about plus or minus 5 per cent). A reanalysis of the two data sets employing a common analytical model has yielded values of plus or minus 9.5 per cent (Millstone) and plus or minus 7.3 per cent (St. Santin).
