The ages of corals from marine terraces in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan have been determined by electron spin resonance (ESR). ESR ages deduced from the total dosage of natural radiation taking the time-dependent dose rate due to 238U-series disequilibrium into account agreed fairly well with those determined by 14C and 230Th/234U dating. The ESR age can be extended, well beyond the limits of 14C dating (50,000 years) and the 230Th/234U method (300,000 years), to a million years.
