The coupling between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere-thermosphere system takes place primarily through field-aligned currents, the electric field, and electron precipitation. Modeling these quantities with sufficient accuracy is crucial for global geospace models because the magnetosphere provides the primary energy input for the ionosphere, and the ionosphere controls to a large extent magnetospheric convection by providing the resistive closure of field-aligned currents. In this study we compare global model results for two periods, one with mixed IMF polarity (December 11/12, 1998), and one magnetic storm interval (April 16/17, 1999) with DMSP and FAST observations. The model by and large reproduces the observed quantities well, however, it often over-estimates the ionospheric potential. This discrepency appears to be mainly due to the fact that the model does not produce appropriate region 2 currents and thus does not shield the inner magnetosphere sufficiently. Possible model improvements are discussed.
