We wish to obtain maps of molecular line emission toward a sample of 35 southern Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) to study their embedded cold, dense cores. IRDCs are identified by their high mid-infrared opacities and are thought to be the precursors to cluster-forming clumps. Our recent mm continuum survey with the IRAM 30m of northern IRDCs revealed each IRDC to contain at least one compact core. Recent CS (2--1) observations of 35 southern IRDCs with Mopra also show that each IRDC contains at least one compact core. Because the core masses and sizes are comparable to hot cores that form individual high-mass stars, we suggest that IRDC cores are the cold precursors to individual high-mass stars. We now wish to compare active and quiescent cores by mapping our sample of 35 IRDCs using the following molecular transitions: HCN (1--0), H13CN (1--0), HCO+ (1--0), H13CO+ (1--0), HNC (1--0), N2H+ (1--0) and SiO (2--1). These data will allow us to probe the early stages of high-mass star formation.
