Results are presented for a study of lunar-soil particle size distributions which was carried out by sieve and electric-pulse techniques. It is shown that the distributions at the two landing sites can be approximated by a log-normal law. The mean particle sizes at the Luna-16 and Luna-20 landing sites are found to be 85 and 77 microns, respectively, with corresponding logarithmic standard deviations of 2.074 and 2.712. For both landing sites, relationships are observed between mean particle size and standard deviation as well as between standard deviation and soil maturity index. The latter relationship is taken as an indication that the standard deviation in lunar-soil particle sizes has decreased by more than a factor of two during the evolution of the soils.
