The paper presents a comparative analysis of model descriptions of the diffusive spreading of an artifical luminous cloud in the upper atmsophere. It is shown that the results of models using the trace-impurity approximation contain systematic errors connected with the failure to take into account the multicomponent character of the medium and the constancy condition of the total pressure of the mixture. A model is proposed here which is free of these deficiencies.
