Common-volume observations of Na and Fe layers in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere were made with a newly established Na Doppler lidar and a refurbished Fe Boltzmann lidar at Boulder, Colorado from June to September 2010. Sporadic Fe layers (Fes) have occurred quite often, some with concurrent occurrence of sporadic Na layers (Nas) and some without. On 13 July 2010, Fes and Nas were observed simultaneously around 100 km with signatures of an overturning event. In this paper we will characterize the sporadic layers and analyze the overturning event. The comparative study may provide some insight to the mesospheric metal layer chemistry and dynamics.
