We use the maximum likelihood method to derive a (formal) value of the deceleration parameter q0 from the Hubble diagram of brightest cluster galaxies (no evolution is assumed). It turns out that the usual techniques are questioned and a better understanding of selection effects is necessary for describing the existing data.
