Astrophysical evidence favors solar empirical damping for the sodium D lines, in agreement with the latest experiment on D-line broadening at the lower end of the range of experimental uncertainty. Theoretical and experimental results for the D lines are briefly reviewed. It is suggested that the broadening of the D lines is controlled by intermediate-range interatomic forces that are best determined by exchange perturbation theory.
