A development status evaluation is presented for ONERA's COME-ON adaptive optical instrument, which employs a 19-element deformable mirror and a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor operating in the visible range. A dedicated computer drives the deformable mirror, which is projected to be capable of achieving diffraction-limited IR imagery. Attention is given to the design aspects of mirror isoplanaticity, as well as to reference source brightness and the temporal bandwidth requirements of the system. The results obtained with COME-ON will inform the design of the adaptive optics to be used by the ESO Very Large Telescope.
