A study has been made of the quantities of helium occluded in natural, coloured rocksalts and a correlat ion found between the colour of the salts and the helium content. All the helium in the salts cannot have arisen from radioactive disintegration of uranium and thorium in 10 8 years, for the concentrations of these elements have now been measured and found to be inadequate. The uranium was estimated fluorimetrically and the thorium by -particle scintillation counting. hahn's hypothesis for the origin of the helium is accepted and an alternative source for some of the helium proposed. Loss of helium from the salts by diffusion has been observed. The absorption spectra of the yellow, blue and violet salts have been measured and the nature of the colour centres is considered. A spectrographic analysis has been made of the salts, and the mechanism of impurity sensitisation to colour production by radiation is discussed.
