During the last half-hour before closest approach of VEGA-2 to Halley, the three-channel spectrometer scanned a triangular field of view of sides 4000 and 2000 km with a summit located at 200 km from the nucleus. Spectra obtained show that the dust continuum gradually increases with decreasing impact parameter. A data processing method based on the calculation of color indexes is used to compare the color of the dust continuum from one place to another in the field of view. Pixel-to-pixel ratios of spectra give evidence of a spatial modulation of the color. Spatial mappings of the blue and red color indexes show color fluctuation present some degree of periodicity with a wavelength of 300 to 400 km. These charts are correlated with intensity gradients of the OH emission and with the intensity of CN and CO2(+). The best correlation is obtained between the charts of the blue color index and of the CO2(+) emission. Observations are interpreted in terms of a modulated triggered emission mechanism at the surface of the nucleus or in terms of disintegration of conglomerates of large grains. Enhancements of the blue color index might reveal either an excess of small submicron particles producing Rayleigh scattering or the presence of icy grains having a blue albedo.
