A number of changes to the deconvolution algorithm CLEAN, which are effective in preventing the formation of 'stripes' or 'corrugations' during the processing of images with extended features, are described. The modifications also reduce the arithmetic rounding problems that may be encountered when a very large number of subtractions are performed with limited precision. The major modification is to remove components in groups rather than individually. This is very effective in preventing the formation of the stripes. A minor change to the order in which the operations are performed reduces the loss of accuracy due to the effects of the repeated subtractions. Because the components are identified and removed in groups, there is a significant speed advantage for large maps. The number of iterations is also relatively independent of the complexity of the object distribution, and there are fewer 'control' parameters to be set by the user. This algorithm will be of particular interest to those who process large images with extensive extended areas of brightness.
