The changes in the dipole polarizabilities of interacting atoms observed in high-density gases are interpreted in terms of collisional perturbations of the absorption spectra. Contributions to the second refractivity virial coefficients due to the collision-induced low-energy shifts of the photoionization continua are calculated for the Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe atoms and are shown to be significant.
