The authors have mapped the two merger galaxies Arp 220 and NGC 2623 in 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) with the IRAM 30 m telescope, with 23arcsec and 14arcsec resolution. The measured H2 masses are 5.2×109 and 2.1×1010M_sun; for NGC 2623 and Arp 220 respectively. It is concluded that most of the CO emission comes from cold optically thick CO gas, a situation which does not differ from a typical spiral galaxy. It is confirmed that the emission from the active nucleus dominates the FIR luminosity of Arp 220. In NGC 2623, the strong CO(2-1) self-absorption suggests the presence of a hot central component surrounded by colder gas; it cannot be excluded that all the FIR luminosity comes from the starburst.
