This paper describes instruments designed for the Italian-Dutch X-ray satellite SAX, which is due for launch in 1993, with special attention given to the two Wide Field Cameras (WFCs). The design of the WFCs is based on the coded mask principle, where the sizes of the mask and the detector are equal. The field of view is 20 deg sq, the angular resolution is 5 arcmin, and the energy band ranges from 1.5 to 32 keV. The mask pattern is based on a pseudorandom array that has ideal imaging capabilities. Other SAX instruments are four Narrow Field Instruments, two of which have rocking collimators (the Phoswich Detection System and the High-Pressure Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter) and the other two are imaging instruments (the Medium Energy Concentrator/Spectrometer and the Low Energy Concentrator/Spectrometer).
