A tentative numerical model of the chemistry of extragalactic molecular clouds is presented. The model is based on recent observations in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. An attempt is made to explain the mechanism of transformation of carbon into carbon monoxide. CO column density vs the total column density of hydrogen nuclei is given for the Galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Small Magellanic Cloud, respectively.
