2111 Ejecta, Driver Gases, And Magnetic Clouds, 7513 Coronal Mass Ejections

Using in-situ solar wind observations in conjunction with other data, in particular energetic particle measurements from IMP 8, we have assembled a list of ejecta seen at 1 AU in the time frame 1996-2000. We have examined the ejecta properties including their speeds and magnetic fields. We have also related these ejecta with CMEs seen by the SOHO/LASCO coronagraphs and associated on-disk activity. As found previously the fastest CMEs/ejecta tend to be associated with large, intense flares. Associations between ejecta and CMEs are most probable when the CMEs are of large angular size i.e. halo CMEs. However many halo CMEs do not intercept the Earth including some associated with solar events near central meridian. Examination of the solar neutral lines around the proposed source regions suggests that CMEs often originate in sheared neutral lines to the east of the associated active region. We also find that a significant fraction of ejecta at Earth are not preceded by halo CMEs.
