A sensitometer was used to determine threshold contrasts for a number of photographic materials as a function of the diameters of optical images of circles; the diameters varied from 13.5 to 375 microns. The threshold contrast rapidly decreases as the diameter increases; at large diameters the contrasts tends to a certain limit. The limit contrasts of various materials differ significantly depending on granularity and other properties.
