During the summer of 2001 the apogees of the CLUSTER spacecraft quartet will precess through nightside local times. This period provides the first extended opportunity for 4-spacecraft studies of the nightside magnetopause, the plasma mantle, the plasma sheet and its boundary layers and the cross-tail current layer. In this paper, we present observations of electrons in the energy range ~1 eV - 26 keV made by the Plasma Electron And Current Experiment (PEACE). During this phase of the mission, the spacecraft cut from North to South through the near-Earth plasma sheet and have a tetrahedral configuration with separations of order ~2000 km. This scale size is optimised for the study of the 3-D structure and substructure of the near-Earth tail and its evolution during geomagnetic activity. For example, using the 4 spacecraft timings, we may determine the speed and direction of the plasma sheet boundary as this region thins prior to substorm onset, and as it expands back over the spacecraft quartet following dipolarization. With CLUSTER PEACE data, the 3-D configuration and evolution of electron populations within the near-Earth plasma sheet can also be determined for the first time. Results from initial studies of these regions and events will be presented.
