Scientific paper
We use cluster four spacecraft data to study the spatial-temporal characteristics of in/near the earth‘s mid-altitude magnetospheric cusp under northward IMF condition. The relationship of the spatial-temporal structures to the transport processes of solar wind into the magnetosphere is discussed. In one event tailward of the normal Cusp, we find there is one region seen by all the four spacecraft in an hour or so where we see cusp-like ions. We discussed the formation mechanism of this region under northward IMF condition. In another event, we find the electron edge and ion edge, which might caused by the tailward-of-cusp reconnection. The related auroral phenomena is also studied. These mid-altitude Cusp behaviors in the northward IMF condition are discussed and the reconnection models are applied to explain these features.
