Bursts of band-limited Pc 1 waves (near 0.5 Hz) with normalized frequency f / fH+ ~ 0.5 were observed by the Cluster spacecraft during two ~10-hour passes in the high-latitude southern dusk flank polar cap (XGSE ~0 to -10 RE, YGSE ~ 6 to 10 RE, ZGSE ~ -11 to -14 RE), one each during Fall 2002 and Fall 2003. Wave bursts were embedded in regions of H+ and O+ ions streaming away from Earth along magnetic field lines at the same velocity (~140 km/s). Waves occurred only when H+ fluxes increased by factors of 10-1000 and energies of both ion species increased by factors of up to 10. Waves were generally associated with intervals of southward IMF Bz and Kp ≥ 4, but showed no significant dependence on solar wind pressure. A study of Cluster passes during the month before and after each event revealed numerous examples of such streaming H+ and O+ ions, but no other examples of such waves or of such large enhancements in proton fluxes. We discuss possible mechanisms for the observed ion streaming and for the generation of these waves.
