In Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), nature has given us exquisite tools to survey the cosmos. Through monthly deep imaging of cluster fields using Magellan (with IMACS in f/2 mode) over five nights, we will discover a large number of SNe, including SNe in the clusters as well as background SNe that are measurably gravitationally lensed. The cluster SN sample will yield SN Ia and core-collapse SN rates, with important applications to constraining SN Ia progenitor models and the star formation and metal enrichment histories of the Universe. The lensed SN sample will be truly novel, as no measurably magnified SN has ever been conclusively identified, and provide constraints on dark matter models through a measure of small-scale substructure in the clusters. A targeted cluster SN search, to deep limits, is the most efficient way to find these supernovae. Here we propose to use Gemini to obtain optical spectra of these SNe and J-band photometry.
