Results of experiments aimed at determining the source of vesicles in synthetic chondrules are reported. It is found, in particular, that trapped air, with or without moisture, and binding agents cause most vesicles in experimental charges. The absence of vesicles in all chondrules means chondrule precursors must have consisted of anhydrous silicates. The absence of vesicles in chondrules is not inconsistent with the flash heating mechanism.
